Overview

The short version: Your journal data stays on your device. We don't collect, track, or sell your personal information.

Data Storage

Local-First Architecture

All your journal data—tasks, events, habits, moods, and notes—is stored locally on your device using a SQLite database. Your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to sync it.

iCloud Sync (Optional)

If you enable iCloud sync, your data is stored in your personal iCloud account. This sync is:

Controlled entirely by you
Encrypted by Apple
Stored in your private iCloud container
Not accessible to us

We do not have access to your iCloud data.

Apple Watch

If you use the Apple Watch companion app, data is synced between your iPhone and Apple Watch using Apple's WatchConnectivity framework. This data transfer:

Occurs directly between your devices
Does not pass through our servers
Is managed by Apple's secure protocols

Data We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect, store, or have access to:

Your journal entries, tasks, habits, or moods
Your personal information (name, email, phone)
Your location data
Analytics or usage data
Device identifiers
Any tracking information

Third-Party Services

Apple Services

Dot Journal uses the following Apple services:

iCloud (optional): For syncing data across your devices
Face ID / Touch ID: For app lock functionality (biometric data is handled entirely by Apple and never accessed by the app)
App Store: For in-app purchases

In-App Purchases

Purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment information. Apple's privacy policy governs these transactions.

Data Security

On-Device Protection

All data is stored locally in the app's sandboxed container
Optional Face ID / Touch ID protection for app access
Data is encrypted by iOS at rest

Data Export

You can export your data at any time in multiple formats (JSON, CSV, Markdown). Your data belongs to you.

Children's Privacy

Dot Journal does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. The app does not require account creation or personal information to function.

Data Retention and Deletion

Since all data is stored locally on your device:

Retention: Data remains on your device until you delete it
Deletion: Uninstalling the app removes all local data
iCloud: Disabling iCloud sync or deleting the app removes data from iCloud

You have complete control over your data at all times.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
